2. Hyer Counselor Linde Thompson explained that it's OK if your child cannot yet read or doesn't know all of his or her sounds. The most important skill to foster in preparation for kindergarten is independence: for example, being able to independently dress and carry a backpack.

3. Be on the look out for Kindergarten screening sign-ups. They will take place (and only offered once) in May and are meant to help create classrooms with a balance of students at different skill-levels.
